Chapter 12

After Wes secured Daniel and me as official short-term SF consultants, we left headquarters and traveled to the heart of Boise in an SF sedan.

Xanthia pulled the sedan into a McDonald’s parking lot and cut the engine.

“Are we getting Big Macs before we go?” I glanced at the drive-through.

Xanthia laughed, her eyes twinkling. “I hadn’t intended to, but now that you mention it, french fries do sound good.” She pointed at a darkened corner of the parking lot. “See that over there? That’s the nearest portal door to hell.”

My eyebrows shot up. “Seriously? There’s a portal door right here in the middle of town?”

“Yep. Seriously. The portals are in the most surprising places. There’s one in California at a public botanical gardens. The groundskeepers are always replanting around it. I’m sure it’s baffling to them why the plants by it keep dying.”

“It’s been a while since I have ventured to the underworld.” Daniel sat stiffly in his seat, a faint glow emitting from his skin. “I can only hope our maker will approve of this little venture. Usually, we are not allowed to visit the underworld unless we are instructed to.”

I leaned forward from where I sat in the backseat and put my hand on Daniel’s shoulder. “Are you sure you can go? Is this going to cause problems for you? I know the only reason you’re helping me is to try to get in our maker’s good graces again so you can resume living in heaven.”

Daniel gave my hand a placating pat. “Don’t fear, my young angel. All will be well.”

“Are you two ready?” Xanthia took off her seatbelt and opened her door. “It’s kinda hot down there, Daria. I hope you’re ready to sweat.” She gave me a wicked grin.

I stopped unbuckling my seatbelt. “Wait a minute—will I be able to tolerate the heat?”

Xanthia laughed. “Of course you will. I’m just messing with you.”

The three of us stepped out of the vehicle, and the cool nighttime air swirled around us. A line of cars waited at the drive-through. Most likely, the occupants were all normal humans out for a late-night snack.

I stepped closer to Xanthia and asked quietly, “What if they see us disappear into the portal?”

She just shook her head and continued walking across the parking lot, her loud boots stomping on the pavement. “They won’t see anything unusual. I keep forgetting that you’re new to the community and don’t understand how everything works. Did Logan ever explain to you about sorcerer magic and how it interferes with human memories?”

I nodded. “Yeah, he told me all about that. Does that mean that all portal doors have been secured with sorcerer magic?”

Xanthia smiled. “Bingo. If any of those people happen to glance over here while we disappear into the portal, all they’ll see are three people walking toward the parking lot corner then continuing on down the alleyway back there. They won’t see us disappear.”

When we reached the portal, I could make out its faint lines. They glowed dark, like a glittery silver line, barely visible in the night.
